Tony Awards

And the Award Goes To…

I am a musical theater geek. From as far back as I can remember, I had always dreamed of performing on Broadway. That dream came to fruition back in 1989, when I received a role in the Broadway revival of Shenandoah. I will admit that after marrying Jeff and the birth of Yale and Serena, performing on Broadway ranks third in the best things that ever happened to me. And the fourth thing would be attending the Tony Awards, which I, along with Jeff, Yale, and Serena, will be doing tonight!

When I received the instructions for attendance, including tickets, arrival, and seating time, the words “black tie attire,” made my heart skip a beat. As all of you know by now, dressing up is my “thang,” therefore, I relish the opportunity to don evening attire, especially black tie. I immediately ran to my closet, the contents of which I know by heart, to see what could pass the dress code and still feel new and fresh. Sadly, nothing in my closet fit the bill and so I did what I have never done before, I went online.

My first action was to Google what people wore to the Tony Awards last year. I wanted to see just how dressy, froofy, poofy, or fitted the gowns were. From there, I decided to shop online! I googled Saks Fifth Avenue evening wear and scrolled up and down pages of gowns that did not particularly—you will pardon the pun—strike my fancy.

That is until I laid eyes on this beautiful long lace and tulle gown with an off the shoulder fitted top by Sachin and Babi. I happen to know of these designers, since I own many of their dresses. I used to purchase them at BOCA; when the owner stopped carrying the line, I was heartbroken. Their dresses are beautifully made and well designed and fit me perfectly. I never had to alter them, as the length and fit were always perfect. I was always a size 4 in their dresses, and when I saw that this gown was sold out at Saks in every size except a size 4, I decided that it was meant to be, and I ordered it.

When the box arrived, I quietly prayed that it would fit and be the dress of my dreams. When I zipped it up and looked in the mirror, I knew that this was “the one.” Ordering a dress online, for a special occasion, is a complete departure for me. I love to shop for a dress in person, in the store, and with the help of a stylist. But after this experience, I think I may become an online shopper after all. In the category of Tony dresses, the award goes to… Sachin and Babi!

  • Man, that dress is stunning on you Lesley!! I always love ordering online because it’s so easy—but there’s always that worry about fit if you can’t order a couple of sizes!!
I bet you had the best time that night!!
